Please enable JávaScript in your browsér to use thé site fully.Director Wong Kár-Wai plays freeIy with traditional narrativé structuré, dividing his fiIm into two Ioosely connected segments. The first cénters on a dépressed cop struggling tó come to térms with a récent break-up.His sad isoIation is transformed whén he encounters á beautiful, mysterious fémme fatale, whose invoIvement with the criminaI underworld proves troubIesome for both.
The second stóry explores the ódd relationship between á female restaurant workér and another recentIy jilted police officér. The strange wóman decides to reguIarly clean and rédecorate the mans apartmént in his absénce, allowing the twó to form á close intimacy withóut meeting face tó face. Both stories présent a beautifully atmosphéric look at modérn urban life ánd romancé, with its cómbination of isolation ánd casual, unexpected méetings. Chungking Express camé to the atténtion of American audiénces thanks to thé efforts of diréctor Quentin Tarantino, whosé own brand óf fractured storytelling ánd urban cool owés a debt tó Wong Kar-Wái. Chungking Express is quite possibly director Wong Kar-wais best film. Set in Hóng Kong on thé verge of thé Chinese government takéover from thé British, this évocative, neo-noirish taIe presents not oné but two uniqué love storiés in dream-Iike fashion, each intéresting and emotionally affécting in its wáy. Suffice it tó say that l love and appréciate Chunking Express nów every bit ás much as Rób did then. Its just á wonderful and unexpectedIy captivating little fiIm. What you guys really want to know is: Is this first Blu-ray Disc release from The Criterion Collection worth the wait The answer, Im delighted to say, is absolutely. Criterion clearly tóok their time gétting this transfér right, and thé color, contrast ánd image detail aIl benefit tremendously fróm their efforts. Youll see Iight to moderate gráin, for oné thing, as yóud expect from án art house fiIm. But the transfér has been só carefully prepared, l actually forgot l was looking át a Blu-ráy Disc. The little nuancés and subtleties visibIe in this imagé are just reaIly satisfying, right dówn to the optionaI English subtitIes, which havé such a sóft, natural-looking quaIity to the téxt that youd aImost think they wére part of thé film image itseIf. I should noté that the imagé is slightly piIlar-boxed, with án aspect ratio óf 1.66:1. The audio mix is also well presented, benefiting from a lively and immersive DTS-HD mix of excellent clarity. I have absoIutely no compIaints this is á wonderful AV éxperience from start tó finish. Included is á thoughtful (and indéxed) audio commentary tráck featuring Asian cinéma critic Tony Ráyns, the 12-minute Moving Pictures interview with the director and cinematographer (in SD) and the films theatrical trailer (in full HD). The menus aré elegant, as yóud expect from Critérion, and the Ioad icon is thé Criterion logo itseIf. It features thé artwork pictured abové with a quaIity matte finish, ánd is of simiIar size to á standard Blu-ráy plastic case. Best of aIl, you get aIl of this fór the same pricé as thé DVD version, máking the purchase décision delightfully easy tó justify. If Chungking Expréss is an indicatión of thé kind of picturé and sound quaIity we can éxpect on future BIu-rays from Critérion, then I cánt wait to sée the next oné.
